The fact is 67% of those wineries are in the Wellington, Hillier area of the county.

Some of these wineries are very close together. See our self-guided wine tour map to discover what is close for easy visiting.

When it comes to Canadian wine regions, Prince Edward County is often overlooked.
But 2023 is expected to be a booming year for tourism in PEC.
See my post about the difference between a winery and a vineyard here.
Why So Many Wineries in Prince Edward County?
Thanks to its limestone-rich soils and proximity to Lake Ontario, the county boasts many of the same characteristics as celebrated wine regions like Burgundy France, and the Mosel Valley Germany.
The soil consists of heavy “hillier clay loam” over fragmented limestone bedrock, with perfect, natural drainage, in PEC.
As a result, Prince Edward County has become home to some of the best wineries in Canada.
Tucked away in southeastern Ontario, this rural region is best known for its fruits and vegetables. But in the last 10 years, the area has become a hotbed for cool-climate viticulture.
If you’re looking to expand your wine horizons in 2023, Prince Edward County should be at the top of your list.
Here are just a few of the many reasons why:
The Soils of Prince Edward County Are Ideal for Cool-Climate Grapes.
One of the things that makes Prince Edward County such a special wine region is its soil.
The area is situated on the edge of the Canadian Shield, which is a huge mass of Precambrian rock that covers a large portion of eastern and northern Canada.
This ancient rock is full of minerals like limestone and clay, which are ideal for grapevines. In fact, many of the world’s greatest wine regions are also located on limestone-rich soils.
The county’s climate is also quite unique.
Thanks to its location on Lake Ontario, the region experiences moderate temperatures throughout the growing season.
This allows grapes to ripen slowly and develop complex flavors. However, the lake also has a cooling effect on the region during the growing season, which helps preserve acidity in the grapes.
As a result, wines from Prince Edward County tend to be well-balanced with bright fruit flavors and refreshing acidity.
What Wine is Prince Edward County Known For?
The county is best known for Pinot Noir because of the soil and the area.
The county is located on the north shore of Lake Ontario, and its vineyards are situated on limestone and clay soils that are ideal for growing Pinot Noir grapes.
The climate here is also perfect for viticulture, with warm summers and cold winters that help the grapes to ripen slowly and evenly.
Secondly, the region is becoming very well known for its Chardonnay and Gamay Noir, but you’ll also find excellent Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Franc, and Merlot here.
How Many Wineries Are in Picton?
The town of Picton only has one winery, called the Black Prince Winery. It’s located 5 minutes just outside of town.
They offer wood-fired pizza, vinegar, and hemp wine, along with 8 other types of wine.
The surrounding area of Prince Edward County has an additional 41 wineries as of 2023.
This number is growing every year, regardless of very few wineries closing up permanently.
Prince Edward County Is Home to Some of Canada’s Best Wineries
In recent years, more and more top wineries have been planting vines in Prince Edward County.
Some of these wineries are even receiving international recognition.
For example, Closson Chase was named one of Decanter magazine’s “Top 10 New World Pinot Noirs” in 2018.
Keint-He Winery & Vineyard was listed as one of Vine Pair’s “11 Coolest Canadian Wineries” in 2020.
Other notable wineries in the region include Norman Hardie, The Grange of PEC, and Hinterland Wine Company.
No matter what style of wine you’re looking for, you’re sure to find it in Prince Edward County.
More Than Just Wine in Prince Edward County
In addition to its many wineries, Prince Edward County is also home to some pretty incredible culinary offerings.
The area is dotted with farmsteads producing everything from honey and cheeses to cider and preserves.
There are also 48 great restaurants worth seeking out, such as Bocados, Coaches, 555 Brewing which serves amazing wood-fired pizzas, and The County Canteen.
