History of Birdhouse Village in Picton

History of Birdhouse Village

Birdhouse City was the brainchild and a creative legacy of the late Doug Harns.

Discover the captivating story behind Birdhouse City, a beloved attraction that has been drawing crowds since its creation in 1980.

This unique community involvement project was brought to life by the late Doug Harns, a former superintendent of Quinte Conservation.

With his extraordinary woodworking skills, Harns crafted a stunning wood replica of the historic Massassauga Park Hotel, sparking the idea for Birdhouse City.

Recognizing the beauty in multiples, Harns and his team embarked on creating a mission to create a collection of birdhouses that showcased Prince Edward County’s rich history and iconic structures.

The project quickly gained momentum, involving schools, businesses, and passionate individuals who contributed their own meticulously crafted birdhouses. The result?

A charming display of miniature versions of the county’s most treasured landmarks, attracting thousands of visitors each year.

Over the years, the village has expanded, and now boasts more than 100 birdhouses, all built to scale and representing different architectural styles.

Of course, the main attraction at Birdhouse City is the birds themselves.

The birdhouses are designed to provide a safe and comfortable home for a variety of bird species, including woodpeckers, swallows, and bluejays.

You’ll be amazed at how many different birds you can spot, especially if you visit during the spring and summer months.

Walking through the gardens, waiting, and sitting in the sun for a Cardinal to come home may take a while.
