Peeking out from behind the trees is a beautiful little area in Prince Edward County called South Bay. Don’t blink or you will miss it.

Arriving in South Bay, Prince Edward County Ontario is like taking a step back in time. The roads are lined with old Victorian-style houses on this county road and there’s a feeling of tranquility in the air.

This area is a very good representation of what Prince Edward County is and its heritage.

It’s no wonder that this section of the county is quickly becoming a tourist destination.

Where is South Bay in Prince Edward County?

South Bay is not a town but a located in the South Marysburgh Ward. Also known as the South Shore of Prince Edward County, Ontario.

Its next-door neighbor is the largest town in the area called Milford, Ontario.

If you’re coming from Toronto, the drive will take approximately 3 hours down the 401 to Wooler Road, through Consecon.

From Ottawa, it’s about a 4-hour drive down the 401 to highway 49 into Picton.

And if you’re coming from Montreal, it will take approximately 5 hours.

Once you arrive in Prince Edward County, follow the signs. You can’t miss it!

Things to Do in South Bay

Little Bluff Conservation Area

There’s no shortage of things to do in South Bay. If you’re a nature lover, take advantage of the many hiking and biking trails in the area.

The county roads provide some visually stunning scenery if you are driving or cycling.

There are a variety of short trails winding 1.5 km through Little bluff.

CAUTION: The 20-meter-high limestone bluff is amazing to see.

Join a group of hikers at the Little Bluff Conservation Area for a day of fun, fitness, and breathtaking scenery.

There is a route that takes hikers through some of the most beautiful terrains in the area.

Whether you’re an experienced hiker or just getting started, we have a route that’s perfect for you.

Prince Edward Point Bird Observatory

Prince Edward Point Bird Observatory is a public bird observatory located in the Prince Edward Point National Wildlife Area.

The observatory was established in 1978 and is managed by the Prince Edward Point Bird Observatory Association.

The Prince Edward Point Bird Observatory creates an understanding, enjoyment, and conservation of wild birds and their habitats. This is done through research, education, and stewardship.

They offer a variety of programs and activities for the public, including school programs, summer camps, citizen science opportunities, and more.

The Prince Edward Point Bird Observatory is open year-round and welcomes everyone there to enjoy the beauty of the birds of Prince Edward County.

We’ve been many times for swimming, fishing, canoeing, kayaking, and boating out to Lake Ontario.

For the birdwatchers out there, Prince Edward County is home to over 300 species of birds.

South Shore Wineries

There are a total of 4 wineries located in the South Bay area.

  • Half Moon Bay Winery – Seasonal – 104 Brewers Rd, Milford – County-grown grapes, excellent Merlot red wine.
  • Long Dog Winery – Seasonal – 104 Brewers Rd, Milford – Boutique winery, 100% organically grown grapes, Great wine.
  • Exultet Estates – 1112 Royal Rd, Milford – handcrafted, authentic wine.
  • Lighthall Vineyards – 308 Lighthall Rd, Milford – Very popular and offer cheese pairings with your wine.
  • All these wineries are less busy, easy to access, and are can’t miss spots in my opinion.

Fishing in South Bay

South Bay Fishing in Prince Edward County, Ontario is a great spot for those who love to fish.

The waters in this area of the county are known for its Lake trout, walleye, perch, pike, and bass.

You can fish from shore in many places but the best success I’ve had in South Bay was at the Point Traverse Lighthouse in Long Point.

There are many charter companies in Picton that offer Fishing trips to South Bay and out as far as Main Duck Island. The average cost of a Fishing trip is around $200 per person.

Kayaking Around the South Bay Area

Kayaking, in Prince Edward County, is a great way to explore the area’s natural beauty. This area is a particularly popular kayaking spot, with its calm waters and stunning scenery.

In some places, the water is so clear you can see tons of fish under you.

Kayakers of all levels can enjoy paddling around Black Creek, and there is a rental company called Cabin Fever Kayak that can provide you with all the gear you need.

On that same note, waterboarding is becoming very popular.

Waterboarding is a type of water sport that is growing in popularity, especially in the South Bay area near Black Creek.

The activity involves riding and paddling on a board through the water. Black creek is always very calm often with next to no waves crashing around you. It can be dangerous as you enter Lake Ontario if you are not experienced, but it is also a lot of fun.

There are many different things to see in the Black creek as you paddle to Milford right close by.

Canoeing is a popular activity in the South Bay area, especially near black creek, and the Little bluff conservation area.
