Broken Stone Winery What to Expect and Free Wine?

Broken Stone Winery
Broken Stone Winery in Hillier

Broken Stone Winery is a family-run, 20 acres vineyard located in the heart of Prince Edward County wine country in Hillier, ON.

The winery features a beautiful outdoor patio for wine tastings, plus snacks and occasional live music. Broken Stone produces a variety of wine types, including reds, whites, and rosés.

When we were there we tasted Pinot Noir, Gamay Noir, Chardonnay, and Riesling. They also offer a Gewurztraminer, Chenin Blanc, Pinot Gris, and sparkling wines.

My recommendation is if you’re a red wine drinker (Like me) try the Gamay Noir, it’s truly amazing! They told me the Gamay is limited so I hope they have it when you are there.

Broken Stone Winery is open daily for wine tastings and tours but I’d suggest you start earlier in the day as it does get busy starting mid-afternoon.

We’ve been to the broken stone a few times and I’m always impressed.

Free wine...Say what?

When we were there they started us off with a free glass of wine while we were deciding what to taste.

My Broken Stone Winery Review

Broken Stone Winery in Wellington

When we arrived the first thing we noticed was the cozy vibes coming from this small quaint winery.

It was 11:30 am and there was no one there yet. We were the first customers and the young server greeted us with welcoming smiles and was super friendly. The vineyard is very cute and personable in my opinion.

The Service at Broken Stone

One thing we always look for at every winery we visit is the speed of the service. For us, it was very fast as we were early.

We noticed right away how friendly and almost excited and welcoming the service was.

We found the experience to be very informative as the server explained the wines we tasted.

When the server came to take our orders she brought two glasses. She poured us a FREE sample of Simplicity white wine.

Broken Stone Wines List

Our wine tasting consisted of 3 whites and 3 reds at a cost of $20 for all these tastings.

A majority of the grapes used for their wines are grown onsite or sourced from other Prince Edward County wineries.

Typically grapes grown onsite drive the cost of the wine up but I found broken stone winery to be very reasonably priced.

Broken Stone White Wines

2019 Chardonnay Sans Chene – a delicious sipping wine.

2017 Simplicity – FREE welcoming wine. A light easy sipping white wine. We really enjoyed this one!

2020 Chardonnay County Grown – Really nice Chardonnay with a nice blend of fruit that finishes lighter than expected.

Pinto Gris – Very light and smooth.

2019 Riesling – This vintage wine is a nice Riesling with flavors of nectarine and honeycomb.

2020 Chenin Blanc – It’s the only Chenin Blanc grown in Prince Edward County. Tastes of tropical fruit on the palate, white wine. Dry and unoaked.

2019 Gewurztraminer – The grapes are grown locally for this one. Mild sweet and dry.

Broken Stone Red Wines

2018 Intensity – Blended with Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Cabernet Franc a deep bold flavor.

St. Laurent - Velo
St. Laurent – Velo

2019 St. Laurent – Velo Vineyard uses a hybrid grape and the color of the wine is deep purple glowing color. It’s a bit hard to explain, but you should check it out.

2020 Estate-Grown Pinot Meunier (New) – The server warned us that this was a small batch only.

Only one barrel or 25 cases. It’s a bold red with hints of cherry and chocolate on the palate.

2020 Estate-Grown Pinot Noir – Oh this was my favorite. Why? The wine has a nice hint of sourness at the start but finishes very lightly.

How’d they do that? There is subtle fruitiness of ripe blackberry and raspberry and is a very deep dark wine.

2020 Fifth Town – made with fruit grown in North Marysburgh at the East end of Prince Edward County by Fifth Town Artisan Cheese Company.

This a rich-tasting, red wine aged in French oak barrels.

Broken Stone Wine Price

Broken Stone Wine Price

I found these wines to be priced very fair compared to other wineries that grow and use their own grapes.

Prices range from $14.95 – 34.95.

Wine tasting cost us around $11 for three tastings.

The Patio

There is no inside seating it’s all outside. They have a white event tent with seats and tables inside. This is nice for those windy, cool, or rainy days.

The patio offers picnic tables and small tables with their own chairs. It’s a large outside area that overlooks the vineyard.

The big popular tress is really nice for shade on hot days.

Live Music

Through the warmer months, there is live music out on the patio.

Broken Stone Winery Food

There are snack foods available for purchase. These are designed to be paired with the wines so ask the server what is recommended with the wine you trying.

The broken stone is a great place to enjoy some of their wine with food pairings. Some of these wines like the St. Laurent Red pair really well with beef.

The samples of food for pairings include cheeses to sliced meats, which can help bring out the flavors of the wine.

Is Broken Stone Dog Friendly?

Broken Stone Dog Friendly

Yes! In fact, while were there they had a dog visiting us while we had our wine tasting.

In some parts of the video from our visit, you can hear her barking in the background.

So I would say that the broken stone winery is a great place to bring your dog.

There’s plenty of space for them to run around.

The staff is always happy to see some furry friends, and they even have water bowls set out for them.

If you’re looking for a fun and relaxed atmosphere, a broken stone winery is a great choice. And your dog will love it too!

When is Broken Stone Winery open?

Broken Stone winery is open seven days a week from 11 am – 5 pm which is very much the norm for most wineries here in Prince Edward County.

It’s always a great idea to start your wine tour early to beat all the crowds. As you can see in our video it was not too busy when we were there around 1 pm but when we drove past an hour later it was really busy.
