A Journey You Won't Forget

The New Royal Hotel in Picton (Not What You Expect)

Living here all my life in Prince Edward County, the Royal Hotel in Picton has been a very well-known place for many local people here.

One of the oldest Picton hotels that’s still going thanks to all the renovations.

It’s been a place to eat, dance, play pool, put a quarter in to listen to the old Wurlitzer jukebox, and meet up with friends.

My grandparents were regulars at the Royal through the ’50s and 60’s when the Royal used to have a “Men Only” side. That dates the property.

Growing up here like most, our parents would go dancing and have drinks on a Friday night after work as far back as I can remember.

Everyone knew everyone after all Picton is a small town and the Royal would encourage social get-togethers.

Going back in history starting in 1879, The Royal in Picton was an inexpensive place for railroaders to spend the night. When the railway was no longer coming to Picton the Royal slowly declined.

Through my years of growing up listening to the tales of events that took place there, it’s clear that the Royal was a lot of things to a lot of people here in Prince Edward County and carried some great memories.

Offering inexpensive rooms to stay, live music, after-work drinks, or casual dining.

Now the new building has been restored in its original footprint to an amazing location with lots of new amenities to accommodate both us locals and the very active tourists community here in Prince Edward County.

While in the restoration phase many of us were wondering what the final outcome would look like and I have to say it’s now a very impressive, very up-to-date charming place you just have to visit.

The Counter Bar

When driving or walking past the Royal the counter bar is the area you see when you look to the left side of the main entrance.

We did not require a reservation, so you can just drop in for a quick coffee, beer, or glass of wine.

I noticed local wines and local beer but also there is a great selection of Scotch on the very top shelf that I just had to sample.

There are tables at the windows right up front where you can sit and watch all the main street activities.

They offer a ton of different coffee variations and tea. There are also fresh bread and pastries to explore.

This area is open early for breakfast or drop-in for lunch. They offer a menu at the bar for food and drinks.

I would recommend the wood-fired pizza!

Lots of local goods for purchase that you can take home too.

Does The Royal Have A Patio?

Yes, the patio in the back is large and partially covered and is called the garden. The area off seating at tables or comfortable couches and chairs.
